Mitochondria, Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

How Mitochondrial Dysfunction

is linked to Chronic Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

Before we get into what foods, supplements, micronutrients and lifestyle changes can help improve the function of your mitochondria

. . .

We will firstly look at how Mitochondrial Dysfunction is associated with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which will help with understanding why diet and lifestyle changes will actually have an effect on mitochondrial dysfunction.

Mitochondrial dysfunction, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are the root drivers of most diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, other neurodegenerative diseases, heart and lung disturbances, diabetes, obesity, and autoimmune diseases. [1]

As mentioned previously mitochondria are extremely important to our health.

If you didn’t read our previous blog post, please click here to read more.

Mitochondria are the only organelles, besides the nucleus, which contain their own DNA [2].

They are the energy production units of the cells, supplying our cells with with energy by converting food and oxygen into ATP, they maintain redox and calcium homeostasis, regulate our innate immunity and they are also the main source of free radicals.

These free radicals, can directly impair the the structure and function of the mitochondria.

The reason they do this is because free radicals are missing one or more electrons.

In order to try to replace these electrons and destabilise themselves, free radicals will aggressively attack other molecules ie. the mitochondria.

Antioxidants are our little heroes.

They can freely donate their electrons without destabilising, meaning they keep our free radicals in check, and balanced.

When free radicals and antioxidants are imbalanced this is the driver for oxidative stress.

It happens naturally when we age but can also be linked to

     * Exposure to toxic chemicals, such as pesticides and air pollution

     * Smoking

     * Alcohol

     * Fried foods

Oxidative stress is a driver of chronic inflammation as the body defends itself against the damage caused by free radicals.

This is the natural defence mechanism of the body.

It is the body’s way of attempting to heal itself by sending antibodies, proteins and blood to the affected area for a few hours.

Typically the inflammation will decrease after a few hours, but if this inflammatory response lingers and remains for months or even years it is known as chronic inflammation.

Severe mitochondrial dysfunction triggers a high level of oxidative and inflammatory damage, impairs tissue function, and promotes age-related diseases.

So How Do We Help Protect Our Mitochondria and Improve Our Health?

… and from our first blog on mitochondria, you learned the importance of how to activate your antioxidants and how to activate your immune system to dampen down chronic inflammation.
