Tired? You May Be Suffering From Mitochondrial Dysfunction

You may have Mitochondrial Dysfunction.  

The mitochondria are the energy production unit of each cell, producing over 90% of the usable energy in the body. [1] 
As mentioned in the previous email, when mitochondria become inefficient at producing energy you feel fatigue, brain fog, mood changes, and as lactic acid accumulates in tissue you feel pain and stiffness. 
This is called Mitochondrial Dysfunction.
One of the two major functions of the mitochondria is it converts food and oxygen into ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate).  Therefore, when you have mitochondrial dysfunction, symptoms will affect the parts of the body which require the most ATP including the brain, heart, muscles, liver, kidneys, lungs and GI tract - most of your body!
The symptoms are broad and can include: 

  • Muscle weakness and breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), loss of muscle coordination
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Autism
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Migraines
  • Seizures
  • Insulin resistance and diabetes
  • GI disturbances
  • Neuropathy and autonomic nervous system dysfunction
  • Visual and hearing problems
  • Learning disabilities
  • Heart disease
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease

The major drivers of Mitochondrial Dysfunction include: 

  • Metabolic diseases – metabolic resistance, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol
  • Environmental toxins – heavy metals, chemicals, infections and EMF exposure – people who work around chemicals, mechanics, hairdressers and miners have very high exposure, which eventually affects the way the cells function, leading to cell death.
  • Nutrient deficiencies – lacking in micronutrients will affect the mitochondria.
  • Gut dysbiosis – this drives inflammation and immune system activation such as autoimmunity, where the body begins to build antibodies against itself. [2]

How to determine if you have Mitochondrial Dysfunction?

Routine blood tests can help figure out where the breakdown is happening in your body.
