One of the major functions of Zinc in humans is its ability to improve the function of immune cells that attack infections and viruses.
It also plays an integral role with DNA.If there is enough Zinc inside the cell, it can effectively fight viruses and stop the virus from replicating itself and forming other variants.
The problem with Zinc is that it cannot pass through the cell membrane.
Zinc is a non-fat soluble mineral, and the cell membrane is fat-based.
This is like trying to mix oil and water - it just doesn’t work.
In order for Zinc to enter a cell it needs a fat soluble substance called an Ionophore to help create a channel or a canal into the cell that the Zinc can pass through.
One known Zinc Ionophore is Quercetin.
Quercetin is a flavanoid, or a plant pigment that has ani-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Quercetin has been shown to significantly reduce oxidation, inflammation, pain and support the immune system. It is also used as a medicine to help control blood sugar, kill cancer cells, and help prevent heart disease.
It therefore has the potential to support a broad range of health conditions related to areas such as allergy, skin inflammation, anti-viral defence, cardiovascular health, weight management & metabolic function, as well as novel uses for exercise recovery in athletes. [1]
When combined with Vitamin C, Quercetin is an effective Zinc Ionophore and will deliver Zinc into the cell.
Think of Quercetin like a gun, and Zinc like the bullet.
Only the synergy of the two provide a functioning unit to deliver enough Zinc into the cell to block the replication of a virus.
The key here is early intervention.
The CDC recommend to start anti-viral treatment for Influenza within 48 hours. [2]
If you’re not taking Zinc and Quercetin already then please let us know at your next appointment and we can discuss further.
Something Of Importance To Note . . .
For instance if someone is low in zinc and they begin taking even a small amount of zinc they can feel nauseous and upset in the stomach.
If someone is low in magnesium or vitamin C and they begin taking just small amounts of either of these supplements, they can experience loose bowels or even quite severe diarrhoea.
This is just a couple of examples of how the body begins to heal, and I'll leave you with one more.
If someone is severely deficient in vitamin B (especially B12) when they begin supplementing they can experience a faster detoxification which can leave them feeling headachy, tired and lethargic with muscle cramps.
If you weren't aware of these healing challenges, you would think you were experiencing a side-effect.
A side-effect means it is a negative reaction.
However, it is important to understand experiencing a healing challenge means that your body desperately needs the nutrients or supplement but you may have to start with a smaller dose and work up to the recommended dosage.
Until next time,
