Serotonin and Omega-3 Link Explained

There is a link between Omega-3's and our Happy Hormones!

What is Serotonin? 

Serotonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in the body and is one of our happy hormones. 

It acts as a neurotransmitter by transporting signals between nerve cells. 

All of the body’s Serotonin is made from tryptophan - an essential amino acid.

Most of us are familiar with serotonin’s role in the brain. 

Often known as the ‘happy molecule’, or ‘feel-good chemical’ it helps with regulating our mood and is integral to our overall sense of wellbeing. 

Surprisingly though, only 5% of serotonin is located in the brain. ..

Serotonin cannot cross the brains blood-brain barrier so any serotonin found in the brain is made there. 

The other 95% of the bodies serotonin is found and made in the intestines. 

It allows the bowels to function effectively, tells us when we are full and is also secreted by the gut if we eat something toxic to help expel the toxin faster. 

Serotonin also plays a role in sleep, blood clotting, bone health and libido. 

What is Serotonin Deficiency?

Serotonin deficiency occurs when the body does not produce enough serotonin, or the serotonin that is produced is not able to be used properly. 

In the brain, serotonin may be breaking down too quickly, or your brain may not have enough serotonin receptors. 

This can also lead to a deficiency. 

Symptoms of serotonin deficiency include mood disorders, general sadness, anxiety, low self esteem, brain fog, anger, insomnia, hyperactivity and digestive issues.

One of the factors that may cause serotonin depletion, reduce receptors, or slow tryptophan to serotonin conversion is an Omega-3 Fatty Acid deficiency. 

What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids? 

Omega-3’s are an essential family of fatty acids that are essential to your bodies wellbeing. 

They must be obtained from your diet as the body cannot produce them on its own. 

The most well known way of obtaining these omega-3’s is through the consumption of fatty fish or fish oil. 


Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Serotonin

Research has specifically shown marine (fish) derived omega-3 fatty acids to play a role in the production and function of serotonin (2). 

EPA and DHA (types of omega-3’s) specifically from fish oil has been found to play a role in the utilisation of serotonin in the brain. 

EPA regulates the release of serotonin, while DHA regulates the function of serotonin receptors.

Low levels of essential omega-3 fatty acids may contribute to the dysfunction of the serotonin receptor and lower levels of serotonin being released (3).

Due to the large amounts of mercury and other toxins found in large deep-sea fish, when sourcing fish to include in your diet aim for those lowest in the food chain like salmon, sardines, and anchovies. 

Even though it says on the label that the fish oil supplement meets with government regulations, unfortunately the government regulations set for mercury is way too high. 

There's only a few supplement companies in the world that goes to the extent of making sure that the mercury levels are at the lowest possible levels.

Supplementation with Omega 3’s may be necessary or helpful in supporting a healthy and happy mood.
