Did you know . . . 90% of All Health Problems Are Stress Related Illnesses?
The following article is #3 in our 4-part series on Emotional Health
When you visit a doctor due to stress, they usually prescribe antidepressants, perhaps alongside other medications.
While they may have their place, mostly they blanket over these illnesses, they do not address the root driver of the illness - your stress, your subconscious belief patterns adopted by you as a child to help you survive, your gut health, your organ health etc.
Without tools to help you through these emotional and physiological issues, we will continue on a path to ill health.
Thousands of years ago, it was appropriate for us to activate our fight or flight response when we were, for example, running from a wild animal.
to make an escape.
These days the body is activated in the same way when a potential life-threatening threat is perceived, however instead of it being a wild animal, it is now your spouse, or your boss, your bills due next week.
So the body is still releasing cortisol and noradrenaline into the system.
Unfortunately, in todays world the stressors are 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
If our bodies are activated like this all the time, we are mobilising resources from our gut, from our elimination system, from our immune system, from our higher brain centres and putting that energy into our muscles to fight for our lives.
This leads to poor concentration, poor memory, digestive issues, trouble eliminating toxins, and a compromised immune system . . . chronically, all the time.
If we have a Ferrari, and we drive it at 200 km per hour every day, this is what its potential is,
it was made to go fast.
It drives smoothly, it’s quick to respond, everything seems fine.
But if we drive the Ferrari like this 24/7 without giving it a break, it’s going to burn out really quickly.
The same can be said for our body.
We need to find a place to rest, daily.
In the previous email we discussed how our internal physical health can contribute to the development of mood disorders.
We also discussed how we can turn our internal health around through alkalising the body, reducing chronic inflammation and oxidative stress and increasing exercise and water intake.
In this third email, we will discuss some tools you can use to reduce stress and improve joy, happiness and health.
While mindfulness (which we discussed in detail in the first Emotional Health email) is absolutely essential for a stress free life, it will be difficult to truly feel peace without addressing the bigger issues.
I’m sure you have noticed in your life how certain events can trigger certain emotional reactions.
If you receive criticism, you might react aggressively.
If you hear a child crying you might feel fear and want to retreat.
You might be extremely sensitive to loud noises, you might completely shut down when you feel sad, or you might beat yourself up when you do something you perceive as wrong, or you might even feel anxious and self-sabotage right when you are about to succeed.
Most of these patterns were created by you as a child, from the third trimester in pregnancy (yes, while you were still in the womb) to the age of 7.
Your amazingly intelligent body put these systems in place as a survival instinct to protect you from whatever was going on at that time, and these patterns stay with us, and we react in exactly the same way as we reacted when we were a child.
This is because as a child, we created a habit through repetition and we go to that seemingly safe place or habitual pattern each time we are triggered.
This subconscious part of the brain works at 40million bits per second and is the habitual part of the brain.
While the conscious brain only works at 40 bits per second.
Making the subconscious part of our brain 1 million bits per second faster.
How do we change subconscious beliefs?
It can be a bit shocking and discerning, learning that most of our life’s programs were not of our own design, but came from other people, and that the majority of these programs are self-sabotaging, self-limiting and disempowering. But the great part is that even though you can’t remember these programs being created, they are actually quite easy to recognise.
Think about your life, and think about all the things that come to you easily, maybe it’s money and career for example - you don’t have to work so hard at these things, they come naturally to you . . .
. . . and then think about the things you have to work hard for, that are always an effort and perhaps never work out.
Maybe you have always had relationship issues for example, whether it be attracting the wrong type, being afraid of commitment, or completely changing/losing yourself when you’re in a relationship.
Anything that you are having trouble with is an indication of a program that is not supporting you.
This is the program that needs to change.
Some people suggest . . . .You can change your subconscious mind in three ways.
Right now you may be thinking why did I say some people . . . and toward the end of this article, you shall find out.1. Hypnosis.
When we are born, our minds operate at a low, vibrational frequency, much like hypnosis.
We downloaded all the information we saw and learnt from our parents without a filter, and this is where our programs are learnt, so hypnosis can help to reprogram our subconscious mind.
2. Repetition, Habituation.
We can change our belief systems through our conscious minds but it takes time.
One way is by reading self-help books, or listening to a spiritual guru.
Your conscious mind is a creative mind, it will receive and learn this new idea.
It will not stay though, because the subconscious mind is resistant to change, it does not learn that way - it is a habit mind and remember it runs at 40 million bits per second.
It’s no wonder most fear change.
So to change this habit, if you consciously read, listen and practice this new idea habitually; repeating it over and over again, the subconscious mind can learn the new behaviour.
3. Energy Psychology
The other, relatively new way to change the subconscious mind is through energy psychology. Energy psychology focuses on the mind-body connection through coaching and healthcare treatment.
Through improving the mind-body connection, you can greatly improve your life and your happiness, and amazing changes can be felt with just 10 minutes.
It is a super-learning experience.
There are many of these techniques that are very effective. Some of these include:
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) (Tapping)
- Thought Field Therapy (TFT)
- Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT)
- Comprehensive Energy Psychology (CEP)
- Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT)
- Heart Assisted Therapy (HAT), and my favourite . . .
- PSYCH-K which was discussed in the 2nd Emotional Health Email, or you can watch a video about it here.
These methods can be used to facilitate transformational change at many levels, including:
- Resolving trauma, anxiety and other clinical disorders
- Working and living in flow
- Improving performance in your field of interest
- Living with greater connection, love and clarity
Once you can clear these programs from your subconscious you will see how much more easily your life flows, reducing your internal and external stress significantly, and positively affecting your health.
Other ways to decrease stress include:
Daily gratitude practice.People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things they're thankful for experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and even have stronger immune systems.
Gratitude does not have to be reserved for the big things like getting a promotion or a birthday gift, it can also be found in the small things - the delicious apple you’re eating, the sun shining through the window and warming the cool morning, your partner giving you a big hug at the end of a long day.
Keeping a journal is a great way to practice this.
Choose a time that suits you in the day and spend 10 minutes, or write at least three things you were grateful for that day and see your life change.
"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."
- Melody Beattie
Diaphragmatic breathing, or Belly Breathing.
Diaphragmatic breathing is a breathing exercise that has tonnes of benefits.
It not only helps strengthen your diaphragm but can lower your stress levels, reduce your blood pressure, and regulate other critical bodily processes.
Here’s the basic procedure for diaphragmatic breathing. It may be easiest to practice while lying on the floor when you first start.
- Sit or lie down on a comfortable, flat surface.
- Relax your shoulders, shifting them downward away from the ears.
- Put a hand on your chest and a hand on your stomach.
- Without straining or pushing, breathe in through your nose until you can’t take in anymore air.
- Feel the air moving through your nostrils into your abdomen, expanding your stomach and sides of the waist. Your chest remains relatively still.
- Purse your lips as if sipping through a straw. Exhale slowly through the lips for 4 seconds and feel the stomach gently contracting.
- Repeat these steps several times for best results.
Positive Self Talk
Start to create a healthy, gentle inner-dialogue, especially when you are being triggered.
Instead of being hard on yourself, think of what you would say to a small child. It might be things like “it makes sense that you feel this way”, or “you are safe” or “you are awesome and so strong, you’ve got this” or even “I love you even when you feel your worst”.
It can be as simple as changing the severity of your words.
For example if you are stuck in traffic on your way to work, when you are already late, you might be inclined to say “I hate this!
Why is this happening to me?!
This is the worst day ever!”
Phwoah, how much more stress have you just imposed on yourself?
Instead you could try “I’m feeling frustrated because I’m stuck in traffic,
it makes sense to feel this way”.
By calmly identifying the emotion and checking in with yourself,
it’s amazing how much of the initial emotion dials down and sometimes even dissipates.
Don’t be afraid to ask for a hug.
Hugs come with an amazing amount of oxytocin, the feel good hormone.
This can increase happiness and decrease stress.
Some other tools include getting creative by doing some artwork or writing poetry, using aromatherapy oils (peppermint, ylang yang, rose, lemon, bergamot and frankincense are some great ones for a mood-lift), taking a walk in nature, meditating, yoga, and doing a few things on your to-do list.

However the one that I use today that has profound effect on negating the subconscious chatter that works at 40 mil million bits per second is…
