When Life Gives You Lemons . . . EAT THEM!

Life is so much better with lemons!

These brightly coloured beauties grow all year round, a sign from the earth that us humans should be eating them all year round!

They come with a plethora of health benefits that not only help to boost our immune system but they also detoxify our liver and lymphatic systems, provide us with electrolytes, increase alkalinity, boost energy and can even break down plaque and kill bacteria in our mouths keeping our breath fresh and our gums healthy.

An easy way to get them into your diet is to drink lemon water every morning and evening.

But more about that later. . .

One average sized lemon can provide:

 17 calories

• 0.64 g of protein

• 0.17 g of fat

• 5.41 g of carbohydrate, including 1.6 g of fibre and 1.45 g of sugar

• 15 milligrams (mg) of calcium

• 30.7 mg vitamin C

• 0.5 mg of iron

• 7 mg of magnesium

• 13 mg of phosphorus

• 116 mg of potassium

• 2 mg of sodium

• 0.05 mg of zinc

• 9 micrograms (mcg) of folate

• 1 mg of vitamin A

In addition, lemons contain small amounts of thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, pantothenic acid, copper, and manganese.

Lemons are a nutritional powerhouse.

Because of their high content of vitamin C, they not only boost our immune system but they also increase iron absorption, assist in the production of collagen, help to keep our skin healthy and increase skin elasticity, keep our stress levels at bay and help to fight viral infections

Very important for life at this present moment.

Lemon is also an excellent detoxifier. It can help to dissolve plaque in our teeth due to it being one of the most astringent fruits and helps to draw mucous or unwanted gunk out of our body through our lymphatic system.

They also help to rid the body of toxins through liver detoxification, and speeds up our digestion by increasing our metabolic rate, which aids in weight loss.

One of the lesser known, and perhaps most exciting facts about lemons is that they have a very high content of d-limonene, a terpene found in the skin of citrus fruits.

D-limonene has been used for relief of heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), to dissolve cholesterol-containing gallstones and has many well-established chemo preventative activities against many types of cancer [1].

It is also a known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, decreases stress and anxiety, immune protector / immunity builder, and is cardioprotective to point out just a few.

An easy peasy way of storing lemons is to …

Well, FIRST . . .

I highly recommend you go out and get yourself a lemon tree!

A lemon tree can produce an abundant 280kg of lemons a year.

That’s loads of lemons!! You will never have to buy them again, you will always have lemony gifts for your friends and family, and they’re really easy to grow, even in small spaces.

So, after you have harvested your lemons, or bought some lovely organic lemons from the supermarket or local farmers markets, you can juice the lemons, skin and all (for an extra dose of d-limonene at your fingertips) and carefully pour them into ice cube trays to freeze so you will have lemon juice whenever you need.

. . . For salad dressings, to add flavour to soups, casseroles or even meat, to add to spray bottles for a room freshener, or with vinegar and water for an antibacterial, multipurpose spray.

Lemons are so versatile!

My favourite way of incorporating lemons into my diet, which is also the most beneficial for overall wellbeing, is to drink a big glass of filtered water with the juice of half a lemon mixed in before breakfast every morning and before dinner.

This is a great way to start alkalising your body for those amazing anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits.

Always remember to rinse your mouth out with plain, filtered water after consuming lemon water to avoid the ascorbic acid affecting the enamel of your teeth.

I’ll leave you now to head over to your local nursery and buy yourself a lemon tree.

A wonderful, abundant gift to yourself that will literally just keep giving, in so many ways.

Until next time,
